The mechanic

Three taps between you and a better question.

The whole app is a topic, a button, a card. That restraint is the design.

i.

Choose a topic

Self, Life, World, Career, Love or Other. Fifty questions each — no page you have to swipe through.

ii.

Draw a card

A random question from the chosen deck. If it doesn’t fit the moment, draw again. No judgment.

iii.

Wait

Read it out loud or sit with it alone. The good questions take a minute to open. Give them that minute.

The deck

Six chapters. Three hundred questions worth asking out loud.

Each chapter holds fifty questions, chosen and rewritten to open something up rather than close it down.

In practice

Where the deck earns its keep.

Five settings where a considered question does more work than a hundred fluent ones.

i.

Executive hiring & interviews

Prepare for the interview you are about to give — or the one you are about to sit through. Practise the answers before the pressure.

ii.

Board dinners & first meetings

Move a table of near-strangers past the weather in under a minute. Choose the topic, let the deck do the rest.

iii.

Team retros & 1:1s

Unstick a conversation that has settled into “how’s it going.” Pull one, read it, then wait.

iv.

Coaching & solo journalling

Three hundred prompts that go past the obvious ones. Useful when the page is blank and the question isn’t.

v.

Long drives & slow Sundays

Questions that make time disappear. Pass the phone around; let the drive do the rest.

The curator
Luis Carvajal Madrid · Executive advisory

Qtips started in 2019 as a private working set of questions I had been collecting for years — from executive interviews, coaching sessions, board dinners, and the long conversations with senior leaders that make up much of my week.

The 2026 rebuild is what I have arrived at after another six years of asking those questions in the room: three hundred, chosen and rewritten, in six chapters. It is meant to be short, deliberate and quiet. Nothing you do inside the app leaves your phone.

Questions, suggestions or a note about a conversation it changed — qtips@carvajal.io.

Support

A hand, if you need one.

Write to qtips@carvajal.io — answers are personal, usually within a couple of days. Bug reports, question suggestions, and notes about a conversation it changed are all welcome.

Qtips is a small independent project. There is no server, no account, no analytics — so I have no way of knowing you use it unless you tell me.
